I'm in the market for a new phone. It's time to renew, plus Pearl chewed up my existing phone.

Has anyone used any of the phones on Sprints list? If so, what do you recommend and not recommend? Even if you don't have Sprint, I know some of these phones are used by other carriers.

I use the now obsolete Moto v551. I am relatively happy with it, although I live in a hilly area and my cingular towers don't get into the valleys. I don't know if that is because of the phone, or the carriers; because I switched phones at the same time ATT was bought by Cingular. I know that my old phone (with ATT) got reception in those areas.

I believe that Moto replaced the 551 with the razor phone (that is on your list). A couple of people that I know that have them like them, although I don't know if the reception in the valley is better with a razorphone, or if it a carrier issue more than a phone issue.

I hope this helps.

Marshall-
I had Sprint, but their coverage really"blew"...so I dumped them and went with Verizon, which is much, much better here.
They have almost the same kind of phones. Mine's almost 7 months old, so it's ancient now! Motorola V53XX series or something...good enough for me, though.
That said, almost everyone I know who owns the "razor" phones likes them.

Do you live with a PDA as well as a phone?

I needed a new Palm PDA, and with the price drops on the Palm 650 cause of the new 680's and 700's, I went with a 650 and love it.
The 700 has a better camera if your looking to have a camera too.
But for the $$, I really just wanted a phone and pda in one, I love the palm desktop software.

If your using outlook at work, you can go to a 700W.

No, no palm needed here. Between home and office I have all the computer access I need, and really want.

I know plenty of people that have the Razr, they seem to like them. There is a Krzr out now, about the same thing exept with an MP3 player, and it's narrower.

Sanyo has a new one out called an M1. It has a 2.0MP camera and has Voice-to-text messaging. I never use text messaging but I can see myself speaking a message and having it appear as text on the others phone, that I could probably use.

Anyone have the Krzr or M1?

I've had Motorola and Sanyo before and have had real good experiences with both. I've never had a Samsung. I see LG makes a few but I think I'll steer clear of them.

Sprint coverage here is pretty good. Besides, anything they don't cover they pay for roaming on.

I'm gonna follow this thread. I like my smartphones, but I gotta have the camera with a flash. So far I haven't found one. Someone would have to get me into the Palm's, if they even had a camera with a flash. I have Cingular and Nextel and am happy with them. I also have the V3 Razor which I don't use because of the address book, which doesn't store addresses. I guess I'm way too picky. :?

The only good mot phone I ever had was the first flip phones, after that all were a dissapointment with their battery life and signal capability, but granted they were on verizon. The few folks I knew that had the razors got ride of them.

Nokias have served me the best.

Palms don't have a flash.
My main thing was the calendar, PIM, contact manager and phone all in one.
And I love the palm desktop software. Been using palms since the late 90's. I carry a small Nikon camera, and have better when I need it.
The 700 is suppose to be a much better camera, but still no flash.
And I don't think a very good camera, even though it's an upgrade from the 650s.

For a kick butt smart phone (symbian phone) with a kick butt camera...
You want the Nokia N73 then.. 3.2mp camera with flash, smart phone.
focus is NOT fixed.

I have Motorola and Verizon. I guess as most people I have had several brands over the years. The best so far, believe it of not was an Audiovox with Bell Atlantic (Verizon). The worst was a Motorola with Nextel. Had reasonable success with Samsung and MCI. About every brand of cell phone I have owned has been more user friendly than the Motorola flips. But I'm used to how obtuse they insist on making menus and buttons. I picked my phone because I could read the keys and the stuff on the screen without my glasses. All the other phones, while the screens and keys were big, the fonts were too small. Course i spent a couple of hundred on it and a month later it was one of the 49 dollar jobbies. Good luck with your search Marshall.

My Audiovox with Verizon was fantastic, although I hated Verizon. Their Cust Service totally sucked... "We are Verizon... you are only a stupid little customer." ... so I left.

I'm a tried and true Crackberry addict. I will say, though if Email, text, and net capabilities, arent what ya need, it can be a cumbersome phone. Wifee has the Razor, and I must say it is a comfortable, and easy to carry phone. We have Cingulay also, and I can say I've never had a problem w/ them.

It is funny how regional phone service seems to be......around here in Western NY, Verizon is the only carrier worth having. Cingular, (used to be cellular one) is very poor here. In WNY, if you want reception and no dropped calls, you stick with Verizon.

Since everyone here knows that, that is what everyone has, so calling everyone here is free cell to cell. We are stuck with Verizon, for what it is worth.

I have an older LG V6000 phone, which I really like. Because it is older, all parts are cheap on ebay. I can get a free new phone with Verizon, but choose to keep this model. On my recent trip to florida, when I was in parts of central Florida, I lost reception. My other verizon friends there had like one bar, so I guess my older v6000 is not quite as good as the newer ones??

Anyway, the verizon girl there said that it had to be my phone, since a software upgrade did not do the trick, and she could not reset it to the local towers. I asked her what would she do if I MOVED there and needed it done. She still said it was my phone, and shipped a NEW v6000 to my house. I still say it was not that phone, but I did not turn down a new phone.....especially since there was no way I was eligible for a new phone without a new contract, etc....usually you pay $50 for a replacement, non warranty phone.

I kept the "broken" phone, which works fine here, and sent back an old scratched up broken phone I had laying around.

Anyway, the only thing I see down the road that MAY tempt me is the rumored Apple iphone, but you guys already know I am completely brainwashed in that "Apple cult" :D :D

Good luck!!

Yea, I think the carrier thing must be regional at most. My Ex went to Verizon from Cingular and hates it, she can't get as many bars. But she didn't like Cingular eaither for some reason?

I've been happy with Sprint in the two years I've had them. I get a few faded signals now and then but it's always inside somewhere. I always have a signal though, everywhere I go. That means a lot to me.

Frank, a buddy I know had an LG and swore he would never get another, something about the volume always being too low and they couldn't fix it. Did you experience the same?

I'm considering this Samsung A900.

It's MP3, Bluetooth, Rotating Camera, Thin, Stereo Headset, 256K color display and all the other garb.

They're running it as a "web special" right now. $329.00 less $300.00. I can upgrade to it for $29.00. Not too bad, unless the phone sucks.

I enabled the email (and web) on my Palm. As I see it for email, the palm is not as good as a crackberry (they're probably the best for that sort of service), but I can nearly get rid of my laptop now.
If I had gotten the Palm W version, I probably could have, but I didn't want to convert over to outlook. Wanted to stay with the palm desktop.
And I got way too many other apps I cant run from a handheld device.
So the laptop stays.

I had a problem with always "throwing" and dropping the flip phones I had.
I'm better with a medium size "bar" phone. The Palms fit very nicely in my hand, nice size.

For any cellphone questions try
www.howardforums.com

They seem to be the last word in everything cellular.

Marshall, All of us have the LG vx6000, and are quite happy with it, except for the Florida thing. 30 minutes outside of where we were down there, close to I-75, I was back to full bars.

That Samsung phone looks like something James Bond would have.......cool.
