I got my christmas present yesterday,it was my name on a paper that says i can stay on my job at the rod department.
Was out with wife and the rest of my family yesterday on a fanzy restuarante to celebrate that event.
But now i dont know if i wanna keep my job, because the govermet is throwing in some big money for education to the ones that get unemployed.
I can give up my job at the company and get money for my education if i think that good for me.
Got two things in mind machining engineer or to be a real chef, but both educations have ups and downs for me and my family.
Engineer:
The education is located at a town 160km from my village and everyday commuting with bus or train is not an option.
That meens i will only be home with my family at the weekends, and i guess my workload here at home will be heavy if i should be in school in the weeks.
And the eduations is 4 years long,3 years in school and 1 year on different companys to test out your skill.
If i take this route i can get a job in this region without any problem, can get job anywhere in Sweden, even outside of Sweden.
Chef:
Education is located in a town not far from here,i can commute with car,bus or train.
Education time is 2 1/2 years, two years in school and the rest on different restuarants.
If i take this route we have to mowe when im finneshed with my school, because the attractive chefs job are far away from my village, but i can get jobs in Sweden and abroad.
Got to make up my mind before last day in January, thats the last day to get goverment payed education.
So im gonna think about this and i need to talk with my family about my plans.
Anyway if i dont do anything i will still have a job....................

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year everyone...

Regards

HGK,
Great news!!!

Just some thoughts.....
As an engineer, let me tell ya, it's not easy.
With most engineering you pick a special field, work your way up in it and if that field looses it's jobs for some reason all that experience is for nothing and re-invention needs to happen again.

Public works, or civil engineering seems to be the one area that will stay strong since infrastructure design will never can be outsourced due to local governments and legaities, atleast from the way I see it.

If being a Chef is a passion for you, what could be better?
People always need to eat. A service type job never goes away. And you could always aspire to have your own eatery.

It's great to have choices!!!

Merry Christimas.

HGK - its difficult to have such decisions to ponder during holidays times. Enjoy your family & times with them NOW. Make your job decisions during January, and having a family chat is a good idea. Commuting takes a lot of time away from your family - makes for long days & very busy weekends as you have to play "catch up" on all your chores & tasks. Come up with a plan that works out for all of you, and importantly, keeps YOU happy too. I know thats a TALL order, but you will come up with something! Best of luck in whatever you decide!

Again, enjoy your Holidays & New Year!

Marty gives good advice there.......enjoy the holiday, pray about it and follow your heart to do what gives you peace.

Just to balance some thoughts here, Chef work is also very hard.....the hours are rough. You work second shift basically, going to work in mid afternoon, working hard all night, getting home very late. When the kids are in school you never see them.

Anything hard seems easy if there is passion behind it. Trust God to open the right doors and close the wrong ones......just keep knocking on all of them.

Happy holidays...OOPS, I mean MERRY CHRISTMAS.....Frank D.

Eggnog?

Congrats HGK on the good news. Like what others above said, do what your heart desires. Follow your passion. You only live once on this earth. Might as well do what you want and make the most of it.

Thanks Sherri! Yes, it really was a great Christmas - I have been very blessed in my girls. It hit me, though, watching them opening gifts this year - they are growing up so fast. Barbies have been replaced by Nintendo, play dress up has been replaced by 'cool' clothes and Disney music replaced by this music that goes 'thump, thump' ... Ok - who stole my babies?!

I'd love to hear more about your teaching as you get into it. I'm looking at going back to school so I may be on the opposite side of the desk. :D

I was a Chris' sisiters today and the other sister just had a baby 2 months ago. She looked at me and said, "I wish I had another one, she's is growing so fast." Emma is only 2 months old and Ang thinks she's growing too fast. I just didn't know what to say. I guess it's weird going from Barbies to thump, thump, bang, bang. :) But just keep in mind that they will always be your babies and when they need someone, it will most surely be Mom.
I'm starting to think being a teacher sort person is going to be toom uch for me. Heck I haven't even started reading anything that I wanted to. I have started making some sort of lesson plan though. I will make sure to keep everyone udated as I go.

Sherri,

You will do well as a teacher. The first part of teaching is to figure out what you want the students to be able to do at the end of the class; then structure the course material accordingly. (Start at the end, then build the structure to accomplish that (those) objectives.)

For example:

Course objective: At the end of the class, students will be able to build a 5 Hp B&S 4 stroke engine, tune a carb, and diagnose 3 instructor created engine problems, while working individually (or in groups of 2 or three people (your choice)), and complete a 15 question written exam on engine components, thier function, and engine troubleshooting.

Then build the course material not on everything you know, but on the things they need to know to accomplish the objective. This keeps the course from being a "technology dump".

Section 1. How a four stroke engine operates.

A. Piston
B. Valves
C. Crankshaft
D. Starter
E. Output Shaft
F. Carb

Section 2. How to assemble an Engine

A. Start with a block and build the engine in the appropriate order
B.
C.

Section 3. Carburators (Due to the difficulty of carbs, a "mini section focussed on carbs may be good. Keep it separate from the main bulk of the material, as it is usually installed "all in one shot" onto the engine.)

A. Carburator components and function
B. Carb assembly
C. Carb installation onto the engine (although this was probably covered in section 2, it would be a good refresher)
D. Tuning and adjusting the carb.

Section 4. Preventive Maintenance

A. Oil Changes
B. Spark plug changes
C. Filter changes
D. whatever else you do

Section 5. Engine troubleshooting. (Save this for last because you need to be able to build the engine before you troubleshoot it. As well, thier understanding of how the engine works, and how to tune a carb, and do PM"s will allow them to troubleshoot problems a lot easier.)

A. Check compression
B. Check for spark to the spark plug
C. Check the oil
D. Check carb adjustments

Section 6. Exam (As you have already seen each person build the engine, that may or may not be tested again. For troubleshooting, you can give them a scenario that they must troubleshoot to complete the course. This can be done either individually, or in small groups, with the outcome being a working engine. The important part is that you state the requirement in the objective statement, and then stick to it.

I hope this helps you, if I "rambled" please disregard everything I wrote! Please keep us posted! :)

Good news on your job HGK. You can now make any further decisions on your own terms.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!
