Well, this past summer I went back into the lawn cutting business for some much needed extra money, and that was BEFORE I found out we were gonna be having a baby. So summer is over and I am in need of extra money even more, so I start work tonight as the newest employee at my local grocery store in the deli dept. Hopefully they will let me work 20 or more hours a week. It's on the way home, so I won't be spending any more on gas except for weekends that they want me to work. I've got my uniform, my ID, my hat and I'm ready to slice meat and cheese and scoop salad. Wish me luck!

Best of luck and keep your fingers out of the slicer and off the scale!

Congratulations on landing the job Bontai.
Hope they have an employee discount program for diapers, baby formula, etc and tylenol for the parents.

Congradulations Joe! :D
As Bob just mentioned, please be careful with the meat slicer. LOL

Congrats Joe! May it all work out well.

I'm proud of you Joe! Good for you! Don't eat the profits.

That was my problem at Orange Julius and Carvel!
I ate portions of my paycheck, it wasn't free.
Which I guess was for the better.

Congrats! Think of it this way, as long as you're inside working in the warm, all is good. It may be nice to be outside blowing snow, but a person can only take so much snow blowing. It's not a good feeling when you have to get up and go to work and you realize that you just thawed out from the day before...I'm rambling again.

Good deal in the warmth. I'm looking for some work myself at the time also.

Good luck w/ the new gig!!! I dont think I could ever do that. I would be eatin deli meat, and especially cheeses all day!! It would soon be a matter of time before I spent all my earnings on cold cuts. :( I bartended for a short stint in college, and well, lets just say a similar scenario developed.

Congratulations on all counts.
Reminds me of a job commute situation I had out of school. My day job was about 40 miles from home. My second job was about 39 miles from day job (just down the street from my house). According to IRS rules, there is some form (2106?) that allows you to deduct the same day mileage from job 1 to job 2 (as long as you don't go home first) off your taxes.
I don't remember the details, but it did amount to a few hundred extra dollars (to me) at tax time.
Just something to think about.
Best of luck,
Ralph

Speaking of deducting milage, you can also deduct the milage you drive for medical purposes.
It usually isn't worth it if you only go to the Dr. once or twice a year, although the first 5 weeks after my son was born I drove about 2500 miles, and the rest of the year I drove another 8000 miles or so.
10,500 miles x .345 (or whatever the rate was) helps. In that year, I was able to deduct about $3622 off of my gross income for milage alone using the "standard deduction" rate.

Well, I worked my first shift last night. I did a short stint in a mini market 30 years ago with a small deli, so I knew how the slicer worked. Learning where are the 100 different kinds of meats are stored is gonna be interesting. Most of the customers were nice, and I had 2 co-workers training me on where stuff was and how to look up the codes for pricing. I spent half the shift washing stuff. The pay compares with a fast food restaurant, with a slower pace, and a LOT less crap to deal with, and the main reason I took the job was the flexible hours. Since grocery stores are now open till 11:00 PM or midnight or even 24 hours, they have a hard time finding folks to staff the evening hours. Nicest part of working in the deli was not handling any money. The store manager said that it is the hardest part of the store to keep staffed, so they pay the highest starting rate for the deli dept. I don't know if that holds true in all areas of the country. It's not hard work mentally, and not too bad physically, considering that I'm a couch potato.

Sounds like a 1st good shift!
Besides all the stuff you need learn specific to the job, were there any items or tidbits that are like ... "geez never knew that, who'd - a - thunk-it"?

Sounds like it is working out well Joe and congrats.

WOW! I never thought of that as a possibility! Definitely worth checking into that! As to eating on the job, it's not allowed, so that isn't a problem. I'm surprised and how much gets thrown away, always throw away the first slice because it may be dried out or dirty or whatever. As to things that I never would think would happen in a deli? Nothing so far... I'm waiting for my first drunk or otherwise impaired customer, because I remember how much fun they were to deal with 30 years ago.

Are you going to keep the lawn business going? And........tell some more of your operation. As you may know, I am in the business as well.
