Ok, I give up.....on the JD 212 with a 47" deck, there is a v-pulley on the right side of the engine. There is an idler pulley--looking at it from the right side--partially in front of and to the left of the v-pulley. Then there is the v-pulley on the deck that the belt goes around. This is the belt that powers the mower deck. I have tried every logical routing for the belt, and none of them feel right--or look right. How is this belt supposed to be routed????? If somebody has a diagram of this routing, please post it or reply to this post and I will give you an email addy to send the diagram to.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here's a couple for a 212. I don't know if the 212 is the same? Maybe you can tell by viewing them?

Vist/contact a Deere dealer with the model/serial no. of the deck... a copy/fax the diagram...

Of course... be sure the correct belt is in-hand !

Thanks for your responses. My wife will appreciate the speed. The diagrams are excellent and appear to show what I need. Didn't know there was a fourth pulley involved. I printed the diagrams you sent, Marshall--thanks a lot.
HGK--the link is great, but only works if one is a registered user of the site. I have to figure out how to do that.
Dave--thanks for your support. I plan to get a larger diagram from my friendly, local Deer dealer this week. Since Deere dealers are closed for the weekend, I had to get a belt from Ace Hardware, and there was noplace I could get the extra info I needed until I stumbled on this site.

Thanks again for all your prompt assistance.

Thanks! I found it to be a little bit more of a project than I expected--had to take the outside bar on the PTO clutch partially off and then had to remove the outer(snowblower--I think) pulley. Got the belt onto everything except the deck pulley when it got too hot to work on it. Do you have any tricks for getting the belt on the deck pulley? So far I have found you can attach the deck and not put the belt on or put the belt on and not attach the deck to the tractor..... I'll get the belt on, it's just a bear of a job.

Hi "M" & Welcome!

Look at the bottom illustration above. See part number 6? That is the tension adjustment. Make sure that you have it turned in (I believe) so that you have the maximum allowable slack in the belt. Attach the deck with the belt on it, then route the belts to the engine. THEN adjust "6" to make the belt snug.

M...

Try rotating the pulleys by hand as you ease the belt on... do this by pulling the belt onto the final pulley...

Watch your finger position ! Ouch ! :!:
