I told a friend of mine that has had a Toro726 in his family since he was a kid that Toro may be merging with MTD. He was so disappointed to hear this news that couldn't stop researching the issue. Finally he came up with the following info. So far we haven't been able to find any information regarding Toros being made by MTD.
It's looking like MTD has formed a joint venture with Torotrak not toro. Here's an article and a Google search if you would like to see for yourselves.
Torotrak sets up venture with MTD
LONDON (ShareCast) - Torotrak shares shot forward as it announced a joint venture with US firm MTD to mass produce products using its IVT gearbox technology.
The two companies have formed a company, Infinitrak, to exploit Torotrak's Infinitely Variable Transmission ('IVT') technology in conjunction with MTD's high-volume manufacturing and distribution expertise within the Outdoor Power Equipment market, they said in a statement.
Under the terms of the deal Torotrak will give Infinitrak exclusive global rights to IVT technology in the 0-25kw power range and exclusive North American rights in the 25-45kW power range for certain products.
These rights, valued at $5m, will be matched by cash and other contributions from MTD into Infinitrak to fund initial investment and working capital.
Infinitrak expects to commence manufacture of IVT units in 2006. Production in the first full year of manufacture is expected to exceed 100,000 units.
Initially, Infinitrak will supply products exclusively to MTD Products with sales of IVT units to third parties starting by 2008.

See, See, nobody dares to generic my Toro! Toro is one of the largest Outdoor Power Equipment brands in the world and nobody is going to screw that up but Toro themselves! And I think that Toro has seen enough of MTD that they will not let themselves down to that level!

MTD has grown buy buying the remnants of failed or troubled businesses (International Cub Cadet, Troy Bilt, etc.). Considering Toro just reported record sales and earning for 2005, they will probably remain independent form MTD for the time being.
