This Is Big Bud Awsome Or What?

The “Big Bud 16V-747” was built in 1978 by Northern Manufacturing /Big Bud Tractors, Inc. of Havre, Montana. It was custom built for Rossi Brothers Farms, in Bakersfield, California, to pull ripper plows to depths of 3 or 4 feet through cotton fields. The behemouth weighs 100,000 pounds and rides on eight, 40-inch-wide tires that stand 8 feet tall. It is 14 feet to the top of the cab, 20 feet wide, and carries 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

A V-16, 1,472 cu.in. Detroit Diesel with twin turbos churns out 900 horsepower. “That motor has a potential of up to 1,100 horsepower,” said current owner Robert Williams. “It can handle our biggest equipment at the current setting, so there’s no advantage to burning more fuel and putting more stress on the drivetrain.” Williams and his brother, Randy, farm 12,000 acres near Big Sandy, Montana. They use the world’s largest tractor to pull an 80-foot wide chisel plow. On a good day, it tills 800 to 900 acres between sunrise and sunset. (A square mile is 640 acres.)

The Williams bought the big tractor from a corporate farm in Florida, which had bought it from the Rossi’s when they disbanded their California operation. The Williams had the machine disassembled in Florida and hauled to Montana on several flatbed tractor-trailers, and reconditioned the machine to like-new condition. The Big Bud 16V-747 cost $300,000 when it was built in 1977. Industry experts estimate it would cost close to $600,000 to duplicate it today. Interestingly, it’s still running on it’s original tires.

“They were custom built up in Canada, with a real hard rubber compound,” Robert Williams. “They’ve been over hundreds of thousands of acres with all that horspower tearing at them, but they’re still in pretty good shape.” While there are dozens of “smaller, “ 400- and 500-hp Big Bud-brand tractors roaming farms, and one 740-hp “little brother” to the 16V-747, the 900-hp model stands as the world’s largest farm tractor. “We’ve had people from all over the world come see it,” said Williams. “We welcome visitors, and if it’s on a day when it’s running in the field, we might give them a ride.” rpm

It does not seem worth it to me to have such a big and expensive piece of equipment that only does one thing. Does it accept a giant lawn mower for summer time and a giant snowblower for winter ? Does it have a pto ? I assume the "ripper plows" are the non-powered type. It's big though.

If you were to stand next to the front grill, your head would just be above the "Big Bud" name on it! Krislu, I am sure it accepts many attachments considering it is a agricultral tractor. And the reason for being so big is cause its a 16valve 900HP engine. A engine like that has the ability to cover many ancres of hard work per day. As stated by Mr. Williams, he was able to do 800 acres per day on his field. No other tractor has a work record like that.

I wonder what else it can do. It's stats are impressive no doubt and I can understand the need to cover ground in an acceptable amount of time. Well if i'm ever in Montana I'll be sure to stop by and see this monster.

Termy...
not to step on your toes or anything, but its not a 16 valve engine.
its a v16 that means its a 16 cylinder engine with a conventional v shaped block.
being a detroit diesel also means its a 2 stroke design .
kinda rare in the diesel world but it makes them very strong and they have incredable rpm and speed.
there nic name is screamin demon
that engine is also called a 16 92
because its got 92 cubic inches of displacement per cylinder.
also has a supercharger mounted between the cylinder banks.
there is a smaller detroit engine called a 6 71 also a 426 and its the engine that hotrodders swiped the supercharger off of in the 50s to use for some of the first hotrods .

Thanks, I thought I had that 16 valve thing wrong. I re-read my own post after you mentioned it and read more on that monster and realised you were totaly right.

However, what I'd like to know is how you know so much about this engine? Such as the super charger being mounted between the cylinders and how the idea was stolen in the 50's for the hotrods. You got to be pretty savy to know that.

Check me if I'm wrong, but arent some of those earth movers considerably bigger than that? I was watchin one in Las Vegas a few months ago that looked to be about twice that size preparing a building site. Maybe it just seemed bigger in person I suppose.

Mine trucks are substantially larger.

If you want to see big, check out this link to see a giant German built mining rig that swallowed a D8.

This one lays it down where it counts.....in the field. (With a 20 bottom plow....I remember when 5 was a big deal. )

A Case IH STX500 Steiger Quadtrac tractor and a specially-designed Grégoire-Besson 20-furrow plow set a new world plowing record turning 792 acres or 321 hectares of prime French farmland in just 24 hours. A 22-man team smashed the previous record set in 2002 by 172 acres or 70 hectares with just four refueling stops and two rest stops.
