The 10HP Tecumseh engine on my mid 70's Gilson doesn't have any cover/shield for the carb. It was gone when I got the machine. Now that I have it running like a champ I'd like to find a cover for it. If anyone here has one or know's where I can find one please post here or email me. I can post some pic's of that side of the engine if needed. :D

okay ill see if i can find 1 of that style.
its a special 1 now because it has the old style muffler.
and your choke moves sideways, not on a dial like the newer ones
we may have somthing that will fit.
if so i will get miss SS to send a pic .
chris.
PS will you look at the bigbud thread and see if i have lost my mind about the detroit diesel engine .
im thinking you might know a bit about them

Ok cool. How much is a muffler like mine worth? The baffles are shot in it. I checked out that thread, I would say you are correct. Those old 2 stroke Detroit's are loud but almost indestructible. My uncle has a 453 Detroit in his 35' fishing boat, that thing is as tough as nails....It's funny, I work on a lot of trucks with 60 series Detroits, some guys swear by them and some say they are painted "boat anchor grey" for a reason...LOL...My experience with them is this....Ya can't keep oil in them, nothing like a Detroit for oil leaks. We had a few in our company trucks....They are all junk....Some are real POS.

if your muffler is shot then i think we can upgrade you to thenewer design shroud pretty easily.
we have a lot of the newer engines with lost rods.
kinda ruins them.
so sheetmetal should not be a problem.
ill price some stuff up and post pics of the parts.
as far as the old detroits go i was always told not to let them idle for more time than it takes to drink a coffee, they would loose a lot of oil at an idle and then you have a problem.

Thats because the engine runs rich at idle, many engines do. You would think a 900HP engine would have a switch on the dash that runs the RPMS shown on the tac at 30000. What do you think BigRegTec???

Ok, price me up a newer style muffler and a carb cover if you can find one. I'd even take a good used one from a " rod thrower" ...LOL....That is what I've always heard about Tecumseh's, they were bad for throwing rods. One of my co-workers bought a 5500W Coleman genset with a Tecumseh. He had some carb issues, took it into the dealer for repair and saw 6 identical machines to his lined up in a row with holes in the block...LOL...A "bad batch of rod's" he was told. This is why I love Brigg's stuff, never broke one yet and I don't baby them. The little 3.5HP B&S on my portable air compressor is old and beat but it just keep's on truckin. :D

Yup, ya want a diesel to run hot, it will run cleaner and have more power. We don't idle the trucks at work, if your going to leave it run and walk away then we set the cruise at 1000rpm and leave it. Detroits are bad for soot and they tell you NOT to idle them right from the dealer. Detroit's just plain leak oil, it runs from them everywhere. Usually the larger the diesel the lower the high rpm limit. A diesel that size probably doesn't run too high in the first place. The old diesel's would rev but the new ones have a hgh torque rise. The 60 series Detroits at work are made to be run between 1100-1300rpm to pull the best and when your hauling a loaded set of fuel tanker "B" trains up some of those hills on the south shore you want a low rpm engine with gob's of torque.

coleman gen sets...
ooooh those are bad.
they shouldnt even be sold in canada.
they are strictly warm weather units.

i was looking at the spare parts pile and i think i found you a
muffler and i know we have atleast a dozzen carb covers to for the new style engine.
now the tricky part is getting the bolts out of the block through the old muffler.
9 out of 10 times people break them off.
the secret is to use some penetrating oil on the for a day or 2 and the start the engine and run it for 15 or 20 minutes .
this heats everything up from the inside and may allow you to remove the bolts with out breaking them.
if you decide to go with a used muffle a nd the cover we will probably fix you up for maybe 20 bucks.
im thinking you will have the necessary hardware in your toolbox as well.
but if not i can help there to
chris

Wierd, my other 8HP tecumseh had the muffler about to fall off as the bolts were loose. What's wrong with the Coleman gensets? I have an old one I got for $100CDN and it runs like a champ. Ofcourse I haven't had to start it in the cold weather yet either......Maybe I will fire it up just to see. We lost our power 3 times in a week last winter and ever since I got the genset we haven't lost it once.
