This blower is in for repair (obviously). The customers complaint was that the auger split, which it has. But the cause of the split was hidden until the snow melted off of it today. The cause...

.
Not really something that you want to see in your snowblower...

OUCH! The last time I seen one of those was when I had a kidney stone removed. I hit a rock last week about the same size. Somehow it flung out from the housing. Must of deflected from the augar. The stuff that the snow covers in the driveway can ruing a blower fast. Next year I am going to rake my driveway and parking spaces before the snow. I get a lot of tree debris, and falling trees. For some reason the snowblower doesn't process wood that good.

YIKES!....
Man now that is ugly!
Looks like the shear pin was rusted in place.

I guess it wouldn't pass the brick test. Supposedly Gravely engineers (before Ariens) tested their snowblower by throwing a brick into it and if the blower threw it out, it passed the durability/stress test. - Kris :D

This is the after picture. May not be pretty, but it will work.

Guess that's why they call them snow throwers and not rock throwers!

This rock CAUSED the augur to split? Or had the augur already been weakened/damaged and this just finished it off? Any idea how old this machine is or what brand?

Chris - fantastic innovation there. I bet those auger rakes are IMPOSSIBLE to find. I am definitely going to remember your repair of this machine for my own future reference.
Thanks! - Marty
