Got a snowfall here South of Boston that was quite intense on Friday. By the time I got home 7:30pm and fired up the ST824 (circa 1986, I fixed up). Much difficulty throwing the mush (mashed potatoes?). There was about 8 inches of snow, on top of a lot of water. I believe it rained heavily prior to the snow. Keep in mind I had only primed the inside of the auger case and hadn't gotten around to finish coating it yet.

Everything stuck / clogged 'like you read about'. I have since disassembled, sand all rust spots, and amd applying primer and a topcoat or two. Will a clear coat help at all or is it just cosmetic?

I heard similar stories from several neighbors and the dealer did tell me that this storm was not a good one to judge a sno-thro's ability. Opinions, please.

The same thing happened to me last year. I had just fixed up a 1980 5hp two stage snowbird . The first storm I tried it on was mush. I could throw any snow with out it cloging and stalling! My neighbors larger machines (8hp+) werent stalling but the snow wasnt going very far. They told me they never had that trouble before.

In the next storm the snow was lighter and my blower work fine.

Painting the inside and chute should help .I dont think clear coat would do anything. But I do find using wax or spray (wd40,pam ,silicone etc.) helps prevent the snow from sticking.

In Revere we got 2 to 3" then rain and it washed all the snow away, then we had that freak snow an hour later which dumped 4 to 6" of good throwing snow. I know what you're talking about, I hate that slushy stuff that just pukes out. Wait you'll get some good throwing snow and you'll be surprised...

Guys,
If you put Clancy's impeller kit on, you would really improve your slush blowing .

Thanks jubol, mentioned this to the Sears guy who was out servicing the thrower last year and was told to wait until the warrenty was up (three more years to go) because it would void it out.

Caj,
You are correct!!
Do not put it on till your warrenty runs out!!

My old toro used to do that.....in wet snow it would "make a snow sausage".
Tightening the belt helped alot. Threw the even wet stuff farther sometimes. like it doubled the throwing, etc.

Ditto on what Frank said. First storm last year was mush and clogged time after time. After I tightened the belts, it really barreled the powder and only clogged once in a while in the mush.

I live in Boston and we got 8.5" officially, but it was less at 6pm due to some rain.

I also have an ST824 (see the Overhaulin' thread) and it did quite well. I was in 3rd gear going uphill. But the heavy stuff is always tough, some of it was only being thrown

I'd put some wax inside. I use automotive wax, but any wax will do. I did put some clear coat on but don't think it makes any real difference.

I bought an impeller kit, but it doesn't look like it will be easy to install on an 824. I wanted to use it as-is for a while, first.
