I have a 30+ year Ariens snowthrower (32? cut, 7.5 HP tecumseh). It still works great. The only problem is one of the seals next to the gear oil fill plug on the auger has a slight leak. Maybe a few drops a day. Can I seal this leak from the outside by applying some sort of gasket sealant, like Permatex? I don?t want to take the machine apart and replace the seals.

Some silicone bathroom caulk might be stronger, but it might react with the seal rubber. You certainly can try the permatex - it will only set you back a couple of bucks. However, the right way is to bite the bullet & replace the seal at some point...

Brian- I assume you mean the auger gearbox. I would live with it until it gets really bad that your having to fill it up often. It's a big job. You say it's a "slight leak", so how often do you have to fill it ? - Kris :D

Hi krislu,

Correct, it?s the auger gear box. I always check and top it off before blowing snow, so about 6 ounces of gear oil have leaked out since I last used the machine in March. Nothing has leaked out since, so I guess it emptied out.

I just bought a new 926DLE, so I don?t want to spend several hundred bucks repairing the old one. I?d like to sell it in my local paper for about $200.

:D Brian,
You might think of rebuilding her and keep it for a backup!!
Even if you spent $2 to $300, it might be worth it!!

Brian- I say dump it. Get whatever you can for it and don't look back. Unless your into rebuilding, which some people are. - Kris :D
