Engine label looks like HS-40, decal shows 4 HP.

Was tuned up a few years ago (service tag strings still on it) but am told the engine didn't start or run well afterwards, and the owner bought a new one. It's been sitting for two years as shown. Mine for the taking. I'm not into engine repair and would just replace it with a modern, reliable engine.

Which engine would you suggest? Would anone know if chassis modifications are necessary?

Didn't find Ariens model number on the unit.

the engine might not be gone so far that it needs replacing.
check the gas tank ,its metal and its known to rust inside.
also check to see if it has any compression.
that was a pretty good engine in its day and if there is anything left of it we can bring it back to life.
a carb job and some iginition work may just do the trick
the model numbers should be on the back panel of the motor box just below the starter area on the engine.
there was a sticker that may be gone by now but they also stamp them into the sheetmetal.
let us know what you find.

What Chris said! SNAG IT! Chances are that it just needs some simple TLC to get her back in shape! Those little Ariens 4hp 20"(?) machines can move some snow! I wish I were in your shoes...

I was updating the posting with a picture of the engine plate at the same time Chris was responding...

I have possession.

Had a lot of fun years tearing down an H70 engine. Got many additional years of use from it.

This engine didn't work well, even after professional servicing. I could try fiddling with it, but replacing it is OK too. Prices online aren't overly expensive, and the added benefit of an electric starter is a good thing.

You can buy a 5.5 hp Tecumseh for around $200, or a 7-7.5 hp B&S or Tecumseh for around $300.

Here's a 7.5hp Intek snow next to an H50.

Thanks, Garandman. Some of your photos helped me repair an old 7hp by knowing what disassembled parts look like before I got to them on mine.

Still not sure what model number (or HP) engine will fit without making major modifications.

Surely someone out there must have a similar model that they can share experience with.

You can call Tecumseh or B&S customer service and they'll tell you from the #'s. Others have fit that 7.5hp B&S, which is why I posted it.

Measure the one you have, it's probably a .75" shaft just under 3" long.

Why not rebuilding ypour 4 hp?<
sometimes new rings makes the job right ! I f your engine has blue smoke
well conmpression is bad then ring job is very easy to do. But if the crank bent forget it.

I am sorry Bobby but I don't quite understand what you are trying to say.
Is it possible that you could take the time to post here in the same perfect English that you use over at Abby's?
