Help, my dad just gave me a Toro 824 that appears to have very little use on it but it is not getting fuel. If I pour a little fuel in through the spark plug hole she fires right up but then dies. It sounds like when I push on the primer bulb that it just sucks or pushes air out under the metal cover that the recoil is connected to.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated since I'm looking at shoveling 6-10" of snow tomorrow off of a 150' driveway.

Thanks,

Sounds like a dirty carb to me. You'll need to clean the jets. Post back if you need help.

First off, make sure you have a full tank of gas. If you have the manual, check to make sure if there is or isn't a fuel shut off valve and if there is one it should be in the open or flow position. I know my Honda has one.

It would also help us if you gave us a background history on the machine. You know... how old? When was it last ran? Fresh gas? Stale gas? How long parked? Those kinds of things. Also, how handy are you?

Start with the above first and someone on this board will take it from there.

Hey Ajace, you still up? Snowing there yet? Bedtime for me here. It's going to be a long day tomorrow with the kids being home.

Yep, it sure is snowing here. Looking forward to possibly getting with a snow removal crew and removing some white stuff. We have close to an inch here already with 6-8" coming possible 10". It'll satisify me for a bit.

Heh heh heh! Nice! We are supposed to be anywhere from 4-7 inches. They called it wrong the last storm a few days ago so I'll believe it when I see it.

Good night for now and good luck tomorrow. May your wish be granted.

It sounds as if the hose from the primer bulb to the carb is broken or disconnected (very common). As mentioned, the carburetor most likely needs a good cleaning. Sometimes removing & cleaning the bowl nut does the trick. Its easy. Shutoff the fuel supply to the carb (close the shutoff valve if equipped or drain the tank). On the carb's bottom is a "cup" or bowl, with a bolt on the bottom that holds it on. Remove the bolt & have some rags or a pan handy as you will have fuel leaking out temporarilly. Once the bolt is out, there are little hole(s) that need to be cleaned out:

Use carb cleaner & a small wire to get the passage(s) cleared.

Thanks for all the help everyone! Hopefully, I'll have a chance to work on the 8/24 tomorrow. In the meantime, my local shop finished the 7/26 that I had been working to get going so I was able to snowblow on Friday and clean up some today. I'm really happy with how well the 7/26 is running. I haven't even bothered to use the electric start since getting it back.

Here are some pictures of my first weekend of snowblowing...

Looks like there is going to have to be a decision in the near future......They both look like good machines.

Hey everyone, I finally have the 824 running close to perfect. I took the jets out of the carb and sprayed carb cleaner through them. I also used the advice about putting a piece of copper wire through the holes. Anyway after some fresh gas and stabil it looks like she's running close to perfect. I even blew some HEAVY snow with it and I can't believe how good it throws. After getting it running I also gave it a much needed oil change. :)

Thank you for all the support!

Jason :D
