i traded away my old craftsman and got a 20 or so year old 1032 ariens.
it has an older tecumseh engine on it.even had points ,but i was lucky there and its one with the mounts for the electronic iginion.
so now it does sport the newer iginiton.
also put in the large stator, from a tractor engine...15 amps i beleive.
also have the 12 volt electric start .have 55 watt halogen light. and may even put on a set of heated grips, priced a set from ariens and ...expensive.
probably get a set for a 4 wheeler.
i will experiment with impeller speeds of course.
as a last resort i have a very nice ohh 18 cast iron tecumseh.
has low hours and would certainly have the power a machine like this could use.
not sure how it would work with the snow.
i have used them in the cold and they work pretty good but never with snow coming down all over them, would have to build somesort of box over the carb and exhaust.
right now its in pieces all over my basement and im still gathering stuff.
kinda convienent when you work in a OPE shop and have lotsa spare parts.
ill keep ya posted.

What, no Onan power?

Author: snowshoveler

Date: 4 Dec 2005 9:15 pm

the onan is just to heavy even for an ariens.
to bad though,it has a thermostat controled air intake for use in extreme conditions.
but hey i could swap that to the big iron tecumseh, thanks Rob

For your heated grips, you might want to look into the ones made for motorcycles or snowmobiles that kinda wrap around the grips. If wattage is an issue, swap out the 55 watt light for an 18 watt one and use the extra juice for the grips.

I don't know how you all find so much time to do the neat stuff you all do. I covet the time and ability to do it though...

For me, I feel like I did some great work on OPE when I drive my wifes car to the gas station and fill 'er up.

You will find that the Ariens heated hand grips will be more than enough. I end up turning them off as my hand start to sweat :?

Be sure to post some pictures of your creation! :D

okay so i installed the electronic ignition, put in the large stator, wired it up and then installed the flywheel with the extra magnets to run the stator.
next i check the air gap for the iginition....darn i brought home the wrong flywheel.
so i check it out and it seems that in order to use the electronic iginition i will have to use a different crankshaft.(larger taper where the flywheel mounts.)i should have known this but my brain gets foggy when i wrench on my own stuff sometimes.
anyway i reassembled it with the point style iginition and stuck in the biggest stator we had for that style.still wont be enough for the hand grips but i think it should charge the battery and hopefully do a fair job with the halogen light (installed this evening)
if the engine is not just perfect it will be swapped for the big cast iron shortly.
i can always sell the 10 horse and get enough to buy the proper pulleys and belts for the larger engine, plus a few beverages to celebrate when done.
we are supposed to get some snow tommorow so maybe i will get to try the monster before it actually is a monster.

Camera is ready, spare batteries are waiting and ready to go in. Now we're waiting on the snow.

The carmera or the snowblower?

Seriously there isn't anything that I've seen that he can't do if he puts his mind to it. Jack of all trades is the best way to describe him. He simply amazes me.

Snowshoveler, you said "as a last resort i have a very nice ohh 18 cast iron tecumseh. " Does that mean an 18 hp OHV engine? Sounds like a great project. Hope you post some pics.

He told me that he has it back together now and he's just waiting to see how it works. I could ask him to take it apart again, but that'll come soon enough when he tries to make inprovements :P .

LOL.. naw, we don't want to have to have him take it apart just for pix.
That was a quick build

about the only real decent functioning mod i have completed on it so far is a headlight.
i did have the impeller and gear box out of it and am planning some stuff there in the future.
as far as the engine ,it still works pretty good i guess.we havent had any snow to try it out in. if im not happy with it im going to go bigger.how much bigger depends on how much money i guess.
the big cast iron would have lotsa power but im concerned with vibration and excessive weight.
i was looking at a 12 horse snowking that i put on my aircompressor (put on proper air filter) and would use it in a pinch but if im gonna swap in an engine its gonna be an attention getter.a vtwin kawasaki would be sweet but thats alot of cash.
probably the best for the money would be 13 inteck.plenty of power and reasonable price.
well im not done with it yet but ill try to get missssssss ss to take a few pics...she is very skimpy with her camera.i dont know why it take like 750 pics on its chip thingy.

Not to get off topic as is so easy to do here but, I'm so skimpy with the pics because it's a hassle having to take the camera to work, (for a couple of pics) change the cable from Mom's camera to mine and then remember to bring the camera home again. :P

Nope, computer has no USB ports, that's why we upgraded the one at the shop. Now it's just a hassle to drag the camera back and forth and when I go for it, it is at work. Luckily I do have it home now.

Oh...

Ok then time to ask santa for a new computer AND another cable ! :D

How heavy is it , that you have to drag it?

Mom and I have different cables as her camera is a Fuji and mine is a Sony. The hassle comes in moving the discs and paper off the tower and sliding it out and sticking the other cable in the slot blindly. (No jokes about that - I know I made it awful simple.)
Do you men have to be so literal all of the time :? ?

heheehh...

Always an excuses.....

I'm such a pain, I know.

My old PC, I got so tired of going to the back of the PC for the USBs for the camera, I was luck and found that 2 of the 4 USB ports were just on a bracket in one of the slots for expansion cards, I was able to chop up an empty disk drive slot cover on the front and mount those two usb ports up front.

It's such a pain.

That's too much, more of the cables are the same..., I'll bet it's the Sony that's different, Sony always likes to do things different.

The Fuji my wife has is the same as my Nikon, which is "standard".

You have to remember that I work in the great land of OPE. One of my greatest wishes is that more of the parts:
A) were called by simple terms that even a complete dumba$$ could figure out - who would ever figure a guy wanted a throttle cable when he asks for a gas line just because the cable is attached to the carb?
B) part numbers - simple straight forward numbers - no adding letters in the start, end or middle, and no dashes.
C) example of universal parts - one bearing/bushing fits all equipment, no having to have 50 different bearing/bushing for each different model of equipment out there...
This is just a small list, there is so much more...

That's too good Sherri...

I'm sure you could write a funny novel based on the silly things the customers do to you folks and the things they ask for.

Like the guy that came back with the blower that wouldn't work but sorta left out that he let it get slammed around in the back if his pickup, just a minor thing to leave out.

There are sure some strange definitions and terms used when trying to get a point across that's for sure, and how some people can swear that that's the way they always did something and now it doesn't work because of a jinx put on it by their neighbour - well it takes all kinds I guess...

i took the ariens out this evening...we have 1/2 inch of snow.
i wanted to see how it would run with the points back in it.
does indeed run well.also checked out the light ...wow very bright .easily lights up the whole driveway its pointed in.
i have never seen a good light on a snowblower and im quite happy with this one,i actually will be able to see what im doing.
we are expecting a possible storm for the weekend so i guess im somewhat ready.
i also made sure we have an inteck in stock ,so if i need one its there.

i had the beast out .
works very nice .especially when you consider that we have 6 inches or very heavy slush.
motor has lots of power and blows about 40 feet i would say.
i had to run in 3rd gear to get enough snow into it to work well.
thats pretty fast. i used to take sbout 3 hours to do the driveway .
this time 45 minutes tops.
i could do a better job of it but its starting to rain and well thats just plain nasty.
the headlight was a real nice feature, lights up the whole end of the driveway.easy to see what your doing.
and the best part is miss ss took a couple pics, suprised me .
she will post monday i guess.

Glad Sherri got some pics.

It's stock except for the headlight?

You are not going to mess with pulley sizes until you swap the engine?

Author: snowshoveler

Date: 10 Dec 2005 7:33 pm

i will swap out the pulley on the impeller .
its a size or 2 smaller than the stock one .
and yes the machine is basically stock right now.
i do have the 12 volt start and the wiring to install it and have the battery as well as a box for it.
the motor however works very well,im quite surprised with it.
i figgured it would be kinda weak.
i was out with it this evening and was moving a few snowbanks with it...until i broke a weld on an auger.
ill have to repair it at work monday i guess.

Here's what the snowblower looks like without the flash and the whoop butt headlight...

and here's what it looks like in action...

Sorry the pictures aren't the best, there was a large amount of snow blowing up my sleeve and melting. :?
